Munster is located in Lake County, the farthest Northwest Indiana county in the state of Indiana. Munster is an upscale and diverse community with a wide range of housing choices. This 4900-acre community covers 7.67 miles with an estimated population of 23,000 people. Munster is located only Because of its proximity to Chicago IL, Munster feels very much like a suburb of the big city.
Business in Munster is thriving. While there are some factories in Munster, there are also numerous hospitals and physician offices. This is why many Doctors and medical staff make Munster their home. Some hotels and condominium buildings are up to 7 stories high, but most of housing is single-family homes in residential, tree-lined subdivisions.

Munster homes sold in 2018 ranged in sale price from $100,000 to $1,200,000. The average detached single family home sold for $293,741. During the 1850s the railroad brought many settlers to the area. The Maynard railroad depot was located roughly at Calumet and 45th Ave.
Did you ever wonder how Munster got its name? The Town was named after the Monster family who moved their family home here from the Dutch Netherlands. They later changed their name to Munster, and in 1870 opened the Munster General Store. In 1907, the Town of Munster was incorporated and given the name of these early home owners.

Hospitals. Munster has two hospitals, Community Hospital, and Franciscan Health Munster.

Middle School children attend Wilbur Wright Middle School.

Private Schools. in Munster include St. Paul’s Lutheran School and St. Thomas More Catholic School. Bishop Knoll Institute, Hammond. Crown Point Christian, St. John, Lansing Christian School, Lansing, IL. Illiana Christian High School, Lansing, Illinois which is moving to Dyer, Marion Catholic High School in Chicago Heights, and Mount Carmel High School in Chicago.

Looking for something close to home to do on Date night? We enjoy going to Café Borgia. This restaurant has outdoor dining and a wait staff that is the best in Northwest Indiana. Giovanni’s on Ridge is another of our favorite Italian restaurants in the area. Nearby, Munster’s new Centennial Village neighborhood has three new restaurants; The Simple Greek, Harvest Room, a farm to table restaurant, and of course our daughter’s favorite place, Kitaro Surf, Turf & Sushi. Our favorite pizza is Dante’s House of Pizza located on 45th Street.
If you are looking for a more laid-back atmosphere, don’t miss True BBQ & Whiskey or Bill’s favorite lunch location, Bomber’s BBQ. Bomber’s specializes in mouth-watering smoked meats. For top-notch craft beer, stop by the famous Three Floyds Brewing Co & Brew Pub.
There are a lot more to choose from. You won’t get bored with the selection of Munster restaurants that are close to home.
Shopping is always close to home in Munster. Grocery Stores include Strack & Van Til as well as Jewel Osco. Munster has a Target as well as a number of strip mall style shopping centers along Ridge Road, Calumet Ave., and 45th Street.
Things to do in Munster:

The Center for Visual and Performing Arts is home to many Broadway musicals and plays. It is also home to two art galleries. On Sundays, the Center host a brunch for the entire family.
Golfing in Munster includes the 9-hole course at Centennial Park as well as the nearby, member only, Briar Ridge Country Club.
One of Munster’s more unique excursions is the Carmelite Shrine and Monastery. This Shrine features an outdoor trail of the stations of the Cross as well as a Grotto that truly feels like the inside of a cave. This Town loves Parks! Munster offers several neighborhood parks throughout its subdivisions. In Munster, there is always a park close to home. These parks feature soccer fields, baseball fields, softball fields, walking trails, shelters, picnic tables, and playgrounds. Munster Park District offers many classes for its residents and nonresidents. They also have a number of summer day camps for kids.
Munster’s largest park, Community Park is located in the center of the town and east of the Munster branch of the Lake County Library. Community Park offers baseball and softball fields, playground, walking trail, and Skate Park. Munster is one of only a few Northwest Indiana Municipalities to have a Community Pool.
Centennial Park, a 200-acre park features a 2,000 seat amphitheater, a 9 hole golf course, 3 acre dog park, clubhouse, banquet facilities, a huge variety of gardens, walking paths, bike paths, ponds, playground, soccer fields, and shelter rentals. It is the focus of many outdoor events during the summer months including Farmer’s Market, the Munster Ale Fest, and The Grape Escape wine and Music Festival. In fact, our office flies the Seven Story RE/MAX Balloon at this event each year. In the winter many enjoy sledding down the Centennial park’s hills.
Centennial Village is a new condominium complex adjacent to Centennial Park. The neighborhood’s developer, Matt Kimmel, has named each of the condominium models after the names of Munster’s Parks.
Does Munster have homes near Bike Trails? Yes!
Pennsy Greenway Trail walking and bike path runs through Munster from Fisher Street, past Cambridge Court Condominiums and then across the Back side of Centennial Park, where it joins the Twin Creek, Sommerset, Briar Creek, Cobblestones and White Oak Estates subdivisions.
Little Calumet River Levee Trail stretches through Hammond, Munster, Highland, Griffith and Gary, Indiana. The trail zigs and zags through Riverside Park, Wicker Memorial Park, Homestead Park, Carlson Oxbow Park, and North Gleason Park. Most of the trail is off-road but there are some short on-road sections. It connects to the 17-mile Erie Lackawanna Trail the Lackawanna Bike Trail at its west terminal.
