Highland HISTORY:
How did Highland Indiana get its name?  The answer is in the land.  Highland’s first settlers were Michael and Judith Johnston. In 1847 the Johnston’s were passing through the area along the Ridge Trail (now Ridge Road) on their way to Illinois. At that time, much of the surrounding area was swampland, except for the sandy ridge area known at that time as the “Highlands.”

Judith taught school in the Johnston home.  She is known as Highland's first teacher. Judith Morton Johnston Elementary School is named in her honor.

In the 1870s, John Cady purchased a large swampy, peat bog area South of the Sandy Ridge Highlands. He began digging ditches and draining the land, turning it into fertile farmland.  I can only imagine what a job that must have been in a time before modern excavating equipment. His ditch is now known as the ‘Cady Marsh Ditch.’

When Highland, IN was incorporated in 1910, the ‘s’ was dropped from the town name.
