Dyer, Indiana is conveniently located only 30 miles from Illinois’s downtown Chicago Loop, and just 12 miles to Chicago’s South Side. Living in Dyer is ideal for Chicago commuters who wish to enjoy a suburban lifestyle. With simple access to I-394, I-94 and I-80, working in the city is easy. In addition, there is an Amtrak train station in Dyer, Indiana with daily rides to both Chicago and Indianapolis.
Today, Dyer is a growing community with a population of over 16,000 people. For decades, Illinois homeowners have migrated from Chicago and its suburbs to the Northwest Indiana Community of Dyer. Low Indiana property taxes continue to make Dyer an attractive community to live in.
New home developers continue to build in the unincorporated areas of Saint John Township which is just south of the Dyer town limits. Are you looking for hard to find clothing or shoes? Here’s a few that are close to home. Dyer has a number of specialty shops in including EcoChic Boutique, Bella’s Girls Apparel, Big n’ Little Shoes and fun places, It’s My Party and The Cracked Glass, a stained glass craft store.
Franciscan Health (formerly St. Margaret’s) Hospital is located on Route 30 and Hart Street. Behind the hospital there is a mile-long walking path complete with exercise stations. The trail is adjacent to the Illinois forest preserves and we see deer here on our walks.
Things to do in Dyer
How would you like to own a house close to fun activities? Dyer is home the Stardust Bowling Alley and FunFlatables, an indoor bounce house. For golfing, stop by the nearby Longwood golf course or the member only Briar Ridge Country Club.
Dyer, Indiana has over 200 acres of park grounds across 22 subdivision parks. These parks include Ponds, Playground equipment, Shelter Pavilions, Bocce Ball, Basketball, Tennis and Bean Bag Courts. Many of these parks have Ball Diamonds, Soccer fields, concession stands and washrooms. Dyer even has a Skate Park and a Dog Park. Before being settled in the 1800’s, Dyer Indiana was home to the Native American Sauk and Potawatomi
Tribes. Dyer’s Main highway through town is US Route 30. Before being settled, this highway was known Sauk Trail and then Joliet Road.
Along Dyer’s Route 30 you’ll find Kahler Middle School which was built on the site of the former Dyer High School. A fun fact is that Kahler School is named for a former teacher, Agnes Kahler, who is buried next to the school in St. Joseph Cemetery. Modern lore claims that Mrs. Kahler still haunts the halls of the school. This school has a tradition of creating a ‘haunted house’ and dance for the students each Halloween.
Dyer Indiana was incorporated as a town in 1910. The town was named for Martha Dyer Hart, who married area land developer, Aaron Hart. During the late 1800s, Aaron Hart developed much of the land in the Dyer and Schererville Indiana area.
